Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg
Mayor, City of Frankfurt am Main
Dr. Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg was born in Tehran in February 1965. She has been Mayor of the City of Frankfurt am Main (Alliance 90/The Greens) and Head of the Department for Diversity, Anti-Discrimination and Social Cohesion since September 2021. Eskandari-Grünberg was politically persecuted for her opposition to the Mullah regime in Iran. In 1985, she fled to Frankfurt with her two-year-old daughter, whom she gave birth to in captivity.
She is the first refugee to be elected mayor in Germany. After eight years as an honorary member of the municipal council as head of integration, she has now realigned the political work for immigrants and refugees as a full-time department head. Her motto is: Diversity is our strength. Before becoming mayor, she worked as a psychological psychotherapist with her own practice in Frankfurt. From 2001 to 2008, she was a Frankfurt city councillor for the Green Party.
